My journey as an immigrant

I hope this message finds you well. I want to share with you my journey as an immigrant, which began when I arrived in this country at the age of 16. It has been a challenging journey, especially learning the language and adapting to new customs without the guidance of parents or adults.

One of the greatest challenges I faced was the loneliness that many immigrants experience. That loneliness led me to use alcohol as a companion during my youth, and I became an alcoholic at a young age. It was one of the biggest challenges of my life. In 1991, I was able to achieve sobriety. Now, at 64 years old, I am proud to say that I have been sober for over three decades, and I will be celebrating my birthday soon in June. Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to helping young people understand the dangers of alcohol consumption before they reach adulthood.

I am also proud to share that I have a family. I have three children who are now professionals, and I always dedicated myself to ensuring they pursued their education and professional goals. I want to express my gratitude to their mother for her support and understanding throughout this journey.

I have traveled many miles across the United States, from west to east, and held numerous jobs and projects. I have been a television producer, worked as an interpreter in labor disputes with the Department of Industrial Relations (Labor Commissioner Office) in Long Beach, and these experiences have shaped who I am today. Additionally, I also started a janitorial company, which has been another significant part of my journey.

With recent news portraying immigrants in a negative light, I feel it’s important to clarify that not all immigrants are criminals. Many of us faced difficult choices and came here because it was the only option for a better life. I want to share my story to help you understand the challenges and the humanity behind the immigrant experience.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your support. Some of you have given me work, others have offered advice, and many have been wonderful colleagues. Your support has made a significant difference in my life.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope it offers some insight into what it means to be an immigrant.

Warm regards,

Germán
